Our store here in Collarenebri, north western NSW was originally opened in 1937 by Mark Cutler and succeeded by his son also named Mark. The store was, and still is all about personal service in the traditional old fashioned way. Now under new ownership since early June 2010 by Mark and Isabel Addy this tradition will continue. Some changes have been made to the interior but the main counter area remains as it was in 1937. Now a space has been cleared for tables and chairs so that locals and visitors to the town can relax inside over a coffee, a sandwich or a Devonshire tea. We now stock a variety of gifts and collectables including handmade Peruvian jewelry, Australian handmade soaps, Australian made hanging crystals, crystal perfume bottles and some wonderful figurines made from nuts and bolts. Mark Cutler senior was probably most noted for The Liberty Theatre he built adjacent to the store during the early 1950s. It consists of a good size open air theatre with a magnificent lawn and also an indoor theatre. Regretably these theatres closed in 2000 due to illness, but as new owners we fully intend to revive what was a very popular asset to the town, once we can access appropriate funding. (contributions welcomed). Much work needs to be done
to bring these facilities up to a reasonable standard before they can
be reopened to the public. Once this happens it would attract locals
from this town as well as Walgett and Lightning Ridge. We look forward
to those evenings when we can see 300 people watching a film again or
attending a show featuring local and national artists. |
